Camping suspended through March 8
–Recent storm activity has prompted California State Parks to temporarily close some areas of Morro Bay State Park for public safety reasons. The decision to close the park came after five significant tree falls and nearly 100 incidents of large limbs falling. While limited property damage has occurred to vehicles and a Ranger house, thankfully no members of the public or personnel have suffered any injuries.
Camping reservations at Morro Bay State Park have been suspended through March 8, 2017.
Campers with reservations for that period will be contacted by Reserve America regarding refunds.
“We have promptly begun emergency work to remove fallen and hazardous trees and limbs, including hazardous trees in proximity to state park buildings and facilities,” said San Luis Obispo Coast District Superintendent Dan Falat.
“By coordination with crews and equipment from Cal Fire and the California Conservation Corps we are more quickly and efficiently able to mitigate these public safety hazards and facilitate public access again. We will be evaluating the situation and progress here daily.”
A portion of Lower State Park Road is temporarily closed due to rising waters and erosion from Chorro Creek. The road closure is in place on Lower State Park Road from South Bay Blvd to Morro Bay Campground. However, the road is now open at the north end from the City of Morro Bay to allow access to the Inn at Morro Bay, the Museum of Natural History, Marina Parking Lot, Morro Bay Golf Course and the Bayside Cafe.
