Started in 1989 as Flannagan’s Screen & Glass and in 1991 started Templeton Glass with another couple as partners. Shortly after, Jim and Rena bought out partners and have been sole owners since. Templeton Glass incorporated in January 2012.

At ONX we focus on farming our crops with the understanding that the fruits of our labors will be realized in a glass of wine… your glass hopefully! There is a French term, elevage, which is applied to wine and it translates to “the educating or upbringing” of wine like parents do with their children. We like to extend that notion into the vineyard and believe that we can train the vines into producing the best possible fruit for wine production.
Our winegrowing goal each year is to raise concentrated and highly expressive fruit. We balance our crop to allow the vines to focus their energy on a limited number of clusters. The vine canopy is manicured to allow dappled sunlight penetration and air movement within the vine canopy. We employ a variety of trellis approaches that match our rootstock, scion, and soil combinations.
Unhindered by convention, the ONX Winemaking Team strives to create balanced wines that reflect both the place the grapes were grown and the vintage in which they were born. From rule breaking to blind blending, each vintage of ONX Wines is completely different, yet delightfully cohesive.

Castoro Cellars, which has been making wine in Paso Robles since 1983, was started by husband and wife Niels and Bimmer Udsen. Niels studied Ag Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. According to Bimmer, “When Niels graduated he wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do but the wine industry seemed appealing.” He started working at Paso Robles winery Estrella River Winery, and says Bimmer, “immediately fell in love with the wine business.”
Niels began making his own wine, which he and Bimmer would sell to friends and family. This eventually led to Niels and Bimmer starting Castoro Cellars, which now produces around 30,000 cases annually. The Rotta tasting room and winery is located in the Templeton hills, and features a unique blend of history and modern winemaking technology. One thing that’s definitely staying is the old redwood sign with “Rotta Winery” neatly hand stenciled in white paint. “I painted that sign when I was ten years old,” remembered Giubbini.
As you drive along Highway 46 on the west side of Paso Robles you can’t miss the impressive stone buildings of Niner Wine Estates. Adjacent to them is a group of old oaks that rest in the depression between two hillsides, forming the shape of a heart. This is the vineyard known as Heart Hill and it was something to do with the heart that begins our story of Niner Wine Estates. In 1914 A.E. Schmidt started a materials hauling service in the burgeoning San Fernando Valley. What started as mules and wagons grew into dump trucks and tractors. Nearly 80 years later his grandson, steve, and wife, Nancy, left southern California for Paso Robles. In tradition of Steve’s grandfather, Steve and Nancy started Steve Schmidt Topsoil. After 10 years as an employee, Ron and his wide took over and have been running the business ever since.
Ron: Ron has worked in the construction business since 1979. He is the proud father of six children and three giggly grandchildren. When he’s not driving the truck at work, you may see Ron astride a Harley Davidson motorcycle or running around the back roads of Atascadero.
Linda: Linda’s will likely be the first face you see at Steve Schmidt Topsoil, where she has worked for over 10 years. After hours, Linda worked as a personal trainer at Kennedy Club Fitness in Atascadero. She is a proud mother of six and grandmother to three adorable children.
