Testimonials:

“A group of 9 of us found our way into the Arroyo Robles tasting room last Saturday after a late lunch and couldn’t have been happier about it. Russell was working behind the counter and was incredibly friendly and accommodating which was particularly impressive because we were not the calmest of groups. He was talkative with everyone and very informative. I think we would all return to the tasting room, just for the atmosphere he created.” – Jessica B.

“We asked about the sparkling wines and Russell said he wasn’t pouring them that evening, but would let us taste since we seemed nice and were just going with the flow. We enjoyed all of the wines he poured that night and took home 5 bottles! That’s the most I’ve even bought at one time. My faves included the Almond Sparkling Wine and the Emergency Relief blend and I’m looking forward to enjoying them here at home. We’ll definitely make this tasting room again when we come back in the spring!” – Frances G.

MICHAEL GILL CELLARS QP VG56.jpg
4125 Peachy Canyon Rd., Paso Robles, CA 93446

Westside Wine Tasting Paso Robles

Nestled within a rolling landscape of oak trees of Paso Robles’ Peachy Canyon, Michael Gill Cellars offers potent and exquisite world class wines. The west side Paso Robles coastal estate takes full advantage of the excellent natural conditions: the mountainous territory is known for its rocky, calcareous soil, and differing levels of hillside sun exposure allow vineyards to be specifically sited for each varietal.

This gives founding vintner, Michael Gill, the opportunity to cultivate luxurious wines unmatched in quality. Inspired by the historicism and beauty of illustrious French hunting lodges, the tasting room inspires images of time gone by. Nestled in the midst of surrounding vineyards and centuries-old oaks, it evokes a classicism and indulgence often unfound in Paso Robles.

Come join us for a fabulous outing of westside wine tasting in Paso Robles, CA. Explore our Central Coast vineyards and unique tasting room.

History:

In the early 1970’s Michael Gill began his own practice as a dentist in Bakersfield. In 1977 during his weekend retreats to the central coast, Gill visited a barren 25 acres for sale in Peachy Canyon. At the time he acknowledged he had little intuition of the potential this property had for growing grapes. However his friend Robert Nadeau recognized its potential and lay out the grid work for the vineyard in 1998. After years of hard work, the perfect temperature and premier sole has created a perfect grape growing property. Now Gill Cellars is producing a modest 1,000 cases annually, ensuring quality and control in every bottle.

About:

Growing up in the oil fields of Taft, Gill was first introduced to fine wines during his postgraduate years in dental school. His best friends parents were professional photographers, and were hired to create extravagant displays of fine wine, cheeses, and food. The fate of these displays were at the mercy of Michael and his friends appetites, which would act as the initial catalyst of his taste for fine wine.

Reviews:

“This is one of the most exciting tasting rooms I have ever been to. Its not to often you get to experience world class big games animals, in a beautiful central coast location. Walking in to this wineries you cant help but notice the massive polar bear, and a collection of animals you would never see unless you visit. On top of the wild game they have amazing wines, with grapes grown right on the property. This is on my Best Wineries in Paso Robles list for a reason. Stop By and say Sherry and Dr. Gill next time your out wine tasting.” – Yelp User

August Ridge EP VG30.jpg
PO Box 451 Creston CA 93432

August Ridge was established by John Backer and Jill Zamborelli Backer in the spring of 2001 with the purchase of 40 acres of rolling hills in Creston. From the beginning their goal was to produce wines that combine the robust styling of the best California wines with the restrained elegance of the classic wines from northern and central Italy. Their passion for the project comes from a love of cooking, eating and sharing meals with friends which leads directly to August Ridge wine style. This dream is a natural extension of both the Backer and Zamborelli families. Johnā€™s family has been growing grapes for four generations dating back to the 1800ā€™s while Jillā€™s family brings the robust Italian food and traditions from a small town just outside of Rome, Italy.

Autry Cellars EP VG59.jpg
5450-B Edna Rd San Luis Obispo CA 93401

Nestled in the heart of Edna Valley, overlooking rows of vineyards and a 40-mile stretch of the Santa Lucia mountain range is Autry Cellars. Owner and artisan winemaker Steve Autry and his tasting room staff pour wine varietals, brandy, and grappa borne from some of the best grapes selected from across the region, along with his signature apple brandy.

Autry Cellarsā€™ informal, unpretentious tasting room is, ā€œdecorated in early American warehouseā€ style, jokes Autry. However, donā€™t be deceived by the modest dĆ©cor. In this tasting room visitors can experience superb wine varietals ranging from best selling Petite Sirah to Malbec and Viognier. In addition, you can taste gold medal best-in-class grappa and silver medal winning American oak and Hungarian oak brandies, awarded by the California Mid-State Fair.

With over 18 years of winemaking experience, Autry became a commercial winemaker 10 years ago and a fully licensed brandy distiller in 2012. A visit to Autry Cellars is about discovery. He says people who visit his tasting room, ā€œcome for the wine and discover the brandy.ā€ At Autry Cellars, visitors gain access to impressive wines and brandies that are available exclusively in the tasting room. Every wine is unique, and each is produced only in small quantities.

As native New Orleanians, Tealy and Greg grew up in a culture of great jazz and good food. French wine was the principal accompliment to New Orleans cuisine at the time. Living in Europe during the 70ā€™s and 80ā€™s, enhanced our wine experience and appreciation of European wines. In the 90ā€™s we returned to California and developed a greater appreciation of California wines.

After working for an international company for thirty years, we decided to start a second career dedicated to growing grapes and making great wines at affordable prices that enhance the culinary experience. After searching for a vineyard, we settled on the Central Coast of California in Paso Robles in 2007. It is still a place where the vineyard farmer and the wine maker are the same person and winemaking starts in the vineyard.

The classically elegant wines youā€™ll taste at Bianchi Winery and Tasting Room in Paso Robles are the culmination of the dreams of three generations of one California family spanning four decades. The late Joseph Bianchi was an innovator and renaissance man who experimented with wine-in-a-can and wine coolers, wellā€¦ before they were cool.

Glenn Bianchi held strong to a vision of producing ultra-premium varietal wines that delivered finesse and complexity. The Paso Robles terroir helped him realize that mission when he purchased the 40 acres that you will see on your next visit. Calcareous HP VG59.jpg
3430 Peachy Canyon Rd. Paso Robles CA 93446

Father and daughter Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown realized their dream of finding a place to express their passion for wine in 2000, when they established Calcareous Vineyards on one of the highest limestone plateaus on Paso Roblesā€™ west side. Both Lloyd and Dana, experienced wine distributors in their native Iowa, recognized that the west side of Paso Robles had potential to produce world class wines. Their acquisition of 342 acres atop solid calcareous rock reaching 1,800 feet above sea level confirmed their dedication to producing the highest quality, terroir driven wines possible. It is a labor of love to cultivate fruit on this challenging land, but the reward is immediately apparent when tasting the wines. Calcareous has for over a decdade now, produced a collection of worldā€“class blends and varietal wines that exhibit Paso Roblesā€™ claim to being ā€œdistinct, differentā€. Lloyd passed on in 2006, and Dana advances their vision with the help of her sister Erika.

Castoro QP VG59.jpg
1315 North Bethel Road, Templeton, CA 93465

Castoro Cellars, which has been making wine in Paso Robles since 1983, was started by husband and wife Niels and Bimmer Udsen. Niels studied Ag Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. According to Bimmer, ā€œWhen Niels graduated he wasnā€™t sure exactly what he wanted to do but the wine industry seemed appealing.ā€ He started working at Paso Robles winery Estrella River Winery, and says Bimmer, ā€œimmediately fell in love with the wine business.ā€

Niels began making his own wine, which he and Bimmer would sell to friends and family. This eventually led to Niels and Bimmer starting Castoro Cellars, which now produces around 30,000 cases annually. Bimmer says of Paso Robles, ā€œEnding up in Paso Robles was truly a blessing as the region has grown immensely since Castoro Cellars began making wines.ā€ Read more here: https://www.slovisitorsguide.com/paso-robles/30-years-of-family-winemaking-at-castoro-cellars

ChronicCellars_HP_VG59.jpg
2020 Nacimiento Lake Dr Paso Robles CA 93446

The concept of Chronic Cellars came about in the midst of harvest in 2004. We had used the term ā€œThe Chronicā€ to describe likable objects before, but we had never considered it a suitable descriptor for wine. We sat alongside the crush pad one evening in our wine stained clothes and wet boots laughing about the idea of a wine that targeted a casual lifestyle.

Jake and I were raised in the heart of Paso Robles wine country. Wine and the art of wine making have been apart of our lives since the early 80’s. After graduating from college we both returned to Paso Robles and joined the team at Peachy Canyon Winery. After a decade each of immersing ourselves in all aspects of the wine industry we decided to do our own project. We wanted to try something new and put the tools we have gathered to work on our dream. We had a vision and a desire to make our statement in the wine industry that we could not deny. After four years we took our first step toward Chronic Cellars.
