From whale watching to a Tiki cruise,
sail away with Lost Isle Adventures
Summer is here, and in recent
years, humpback whales have
been consistently present in the
waters off Morro Bay from June
through October. Rather than
simply passing through, many of
these whales are part of a transient
feeding population that returns to
the area year after year making late
summer into fall the peak of the
season. Lost Isle Adventures departs
from Morro Bay daily at 9:30 a.m.
for two- to -three-hour trips featur-
ing whales, dolphins, sea lions,
pelicans, cormorants, and other
marine wildlife.
Owner and captain Dane Jacobs
is a Central Coast local who grew up
on the water. During his time at Cal
Poly, he developed a strong interest
in business, but it was his experience
studying the world’s oceans through
the Semester at Sea program that
helped shape his vision.
“Lost Isle Adventures was born
out of a lifelong passion for the
ocean, boating, and marine life,”
Jacobs says. “The goal is to showcase
the beauty of Morro Bay while
promoting education and conserva-
tion.”
Expect unique encounters
Whale watching tours operate
aboard the Angler, a 50-foot U.S.
Coast Guard–inspected vessel built
for safe, rugged, oceangoing condi-
tions. The vessel delivers a stable,
comfortable ride and features a
heated interior, onboard restroom,
and cocktail service. Thus offering
a balance of adventure and comfort
on the water.
Morro Bay is a working harbor
surrounded by a state marine re-
serve, providing consistent wildlife
viewing opportunities year-round.
Guests often encounter sea ot-
ters, harbor seals, and a variety of
seabirds before heading into open
water. Offshore, humpback whales
are frequently observed feeding and
interacting near the vessel, while
large pods of Pacific white-sided
dolphins are known to ride the bow.
“Summer through fall is the peak
season for humpback whales off
Morro Bay,” Jacobs says. “In recent
years we have had a consistent feed-
ing population returning to the area
from June through October. Gray
whales migrate through our waters
from December to May, so there’s
always something to see depending
on the time of year. On some trips
we encounter a few whales; on ex-
ceptional days, there’s been 20 to 30
around us at once. That variability is
what makes every trip unique.”
For those looking for a shorter,
more relaxed experience, the
45-minute Tiki Cruise offers a
smooth harbor tour through Morro
Bay. Guests enjoy views of Morro
Rock, the Three Stacks, and local
marine life while cruising aboard
a retro-inspired, covered tiki boat
with a full cocktail bar.
