manufacturer in town. There, he
got an education in sports retail
and became a triathlete.
“I started in triathlons in the
early 90s, and that was a big part
of my identity through the 90s.
That sport kind of became my
education instead of going to
Poly. That sounds ridiculous, but
I learned how to get stuff done.
Coming here was kind of like
coming back home to surfing.”
The determination and endur-
ance he learned in triathlons led
him to become a part-owner of
Art’s Cyclery for 16 years. He has
spent his whole life in surf shops,
windsports, and cycling. “It’s been
fun,” he says, “Brief moments of
boring jobs to get me to the next
step, but I’ve been fortunate to be
in this world.”
