Franklin Pond, family-friendly hot springs in Paso Robles.
Affordable, authentic, and full of heart
—Tucked into the rolling countryside of Paso Robles, Franklin Hot Springs is a sanctuary where the warmth of the water matches the warmth of its welcome. What began as a humble family farm has evolved into one of San Luis Obispo County’s most popular natural retreats—a place where healing, heritage, and hometown hospitality converge.
The story of Franklin Hot Springs is rooted in both luck and vision. In 1952, Wesley Franklin was a farmer tending his land when Texaco arrived to survey for oil. Instead of striking black gold, they unearthed something far more life-giving—a bubbling source of mineral-rich, geothermally heated water. Wesley saw not a commercial opportunity, but a community treasure. Over the following decade, he engineered a system of lakes and channels to preserve and channel the flow, creating a sustainable oasis in Paso Robles’ golden hills.
For years, the springs were a private refuge, shared only with friends and family. Then, in the 1980s, the Franklins opened their gates to the public, inviting visitors to share in the healing power of the waters. Today, under the stewardship of Wesley’s descendants, Norman and Cindy Franklin, the springs remain a family-run labor of love—rustic, restorative, and refreshingly unpretentious.
The mineral water itself is extraordinary. It originates in Thermopolis, Wyoming, traveling deep beneath the earth for hundreds of miles, collecting minerals as it moves through layers of ancient rock before emerging at Franklin Hot Springs at a soothing 97 to 100 degrees. The result is water dense with positive ions and naturally occurring sulfur, said to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and rejuvenate the skin. As Norman says, “Our main goal is for people to have a great time, relax, spend time with their family, and live a healthier life.”

Relax under open skies, while nature works its quiet magic
The experience here is less a spa resort and more an authentic Central Coast retreat. Guests soak in a large, pool-style hot spring beside a serene pond where ducks and egrets glide across the surface. Nearby, families cast fishing lines (no license required), paddle small boats, or simply float and watch the clouds drift by. With day passes starting at just $10 for adults and $8 for children, seniors, and military guests, wellness here is refreshingly accessible.
Beyond the water, Franklin Hot Springs buzzes with simple pleasures. Weekends often bring live music and laughter around the fire pits. Visitors can try lawn games or cornhole before winding down with a soak and a sunset barbecue. A handful of camping sites allow guests to linger overnight, stargazing and waking up to the gentle steam rising from the springs.
“Natural mineral water is the best treatment Mother Nature gives us,” says Norman. It’s a philosophy that echoes through every corner of this down-to-earth haven. At Franklin Hot Springs, wellness isn’t a luxury; it’s a way of life, shared generously, and soaked in sunshine.
