Adventures in food, fun, and tall tales.
Alaska has the highest mountain in the U.S., massive open spaces, most wildlife diversity, magnificent glaciers—but the best pizza? You’ll find that at Klondike Pizza in quaint Arroyo Grande. After meeting at a blackjack table in Skagway, Alaska—the gateway to Klondike Gold Country — Mike and Pamela Dennis headed south to open the first Klondike Pizza in September 1988. How they actually met and arrived in Arroyo Grande is the subject of several “true” tales that hang on the walls in the entrance hall.
Peanuts, furry trout, and tall tales
From the peanut shells littering the floor, the old Alaskan license plates, Mickey the Moose, a furry Arctic Trout, and more, to those framed true, factual, and genuine tales about the origins of Klondike Pizza, every view is reminiscent of Alaska. Music from the 1930s to today plays in the background. There’s even an epic movie that Pamela made about Alaska.
Realizing you have just entered an extraordinary place, you begin to think that one of those framed tales just might be true. “I’m forever being told how romantic the way Mike and I met was,” Pamela said. Does it matter which tale is true? Sometimes the best tales are in the telling.
