See exhibits with myriad of themes throughout the year
-You can’t miss the large purple building sporting a new mural with the iconic Morro Rock, on Main Street in downtown Morro Bay, known as Art Center Morro Bay. This is the home for a variety of local and far-away artists who are members of the Morro Bay Art Association. For more than 65 years the community and visitors have enjoyed viewing and purchasing quality paintings, sculpture, photographs, and more.
Beginning in 1951, 17 dues paying members met in local homes and hung their paintings outside on neighborhood trees, using whatever space was available for shows. The association acquired its current home and opened the gallery doors in 1971. With two spacious galleries, Art Center Morro Bay presents eight exhibits on a myriad of themes throughout the year.
Special exhibits include Pastel Society of the West Coast, featuring national and international artists, and an annual juried event with special award. An artist reception is generally held on Sundays during the opening of each exhibit. Free demonstrations by talented, local artists are presented on the second Monday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m. and open to the public.
Join Jason Mayr’s oil painting class on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “Creativity”, held Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a free and informal program, open to all artists who wish to bring their art projects and a bag lunch. The new “Zen Doodle” adult coloring book club is free and open to the public, Fridays, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Art Center Morro Bay works with the local high school to provide an internship and youth program, offers adult art classes and workshops throughout the year. and is the proud sponsor of “Art in the Park”.
Members are the heart of the organization, 256 and growing, with Art Center Morro Bay being run completely by volunteers. Membership in the Morro Bay Art Association runs $30 for an individual, $40 for family, and $15 for students. Non-members may also exhibit their works at the gallery.
