Templeton Chamber of Commerce History
The original Templeton Board of Trade was formed in 1913 to promote trade and commerce, for the promotion of work, and for advertising to encourage growth in the community.
In May of 1979, a town meeting was held to determine whether or not to revitalize the Board of Trade. It was overwhelmingly accepted and a new organization known as the Templeton Chamber of Commerce – Board of Trade was formed. This was in keeping with the original historical name, but also realizing the need to be a member of a nationally recognized organization such as the Chamber of Commerce.
The organization consists of local businesses, professionals and individual members who are committed to promoting economic vitality, improving quality of life and encouraging cooperation within our community.
Templeton History
Templeton was founded in 1886, when C.H. Phillips of the West Coast Land Company ,sent R.R. Harris to survey 160 acres south of Paso Robles. This acreage was to be laid out in business and residential lots and 5-12 acre parcels for a town named “Crocker” after the famous San Francisco financier. When it was discovered there was already a town by that name, this settlement became “Templeton,” named after Crocker’s son. This is the only town along the El Camino Real named for a person, rather than a saint.
Templeton was fathered by the railroad, built on the main highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and, in its heyday, had a reputation for its saloon brawls and wild ‘n’ rough street scenes. The town was the end of the line for passengers coming from the north. Tourists disembarked here and took a stagecoach south to San Luis Obispo.
In 1891, the railroad continued south and the town was reduced to a flag stop and is now a bypass. In 1897, there was a great fire which burned most of the business district. The town was rebuilt, but not to its former glory.
In 1965, Josephine Gilfillan wrote for the Paso Robles Press a series of pieces on Templeton. Newcomers kept asking, “Why was Templeton was built so close to Paso Robles and Atascadero?” She said, “I wanted to tell them that Templeton came first.”
Today, Templeton is a small, quiet town, with a strong community spirit and a vision to preserve its colorful past.
Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1989, the realization of a dream of nearly 25 years earlier. The Horstman house, built by Albert Horstman, a prominent businessman in the 1920s, was donated to the society in 1994 and serves as the museum where local memorabilia and photographs are displayed. Templeton’s original railroad warehouse (behind the house) contains a 1925 Model T in original condition, an antique carriage and other items too large to put into the house. Free admission. Kiler Ridge Olive Farm is a 58-acre family farm in the coastal hills of central California, just minutes from downtown Paso Robles. Our central coast climate and chalky soil are ideal for olives. We use sustainable farming practices, and currently maintain 2500 olive trees — varieties originating from Italy and Sicily.
The farm’s first year of olive oil production was 2010, and that year, as well as each following year, our Kiler Ridge Extra Virgin Olive Oils have won medals in important olive oil competitions, including the Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition, the Der Feinschmecker international competition in Germany, and the California Olive Oil Council competition.
During October, November and December, we are harvesting our olives and releasing limited quantities of our extremely fresh Olio Nuovo olives oils. In February through April, we release our new season’s clarified and Certified Extra Virgin Olive Oils. In 1914 A.E. Schmidt started a materials hauling service in the burgeoning San Fernando Valley. What started as mules and wagons grew into dump trucks and tractors. Nearly 80 years later his grandson, steve, and wife, Nancy, left southern California for Paso Robles. In tradition of Steve’s grandfather, Steve and Nancy started Steve Schmidt Topsoil. After 10 years as an employee, Ron and his wide took over and have been running the business ever since.
Ron: Ron has worked in the construction business since 1979. He is the proud father of six children and three giggly grandchildren. When he’s not driving the truck at work, you may see Ron astride a Harley Davidson motorcycle or running around the back roads of Atascadero.
Linda: Linda’s will likely be the first face you see at Steve Schmidt Topsoil, where she has worked for over 10 years. After hours, Linda worked as a personal trainer at Kennedy Club Fitness in Atascadero. She is a proud mother of six and grandmother to three adorable children.
